How to Reach Sydney
Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) receives direct flights from across Asia, the US West Coast, the UK, and the Middle East. It's one of the world's best-connected airports. The Airport Link train reaches Central Station in 13 minutes — fast, cheap, and hassle-free.
Buy an Opal card on arrival for all public transport — trains, ferries, buses, and light rail. The ferry from Circular Quay to Manly is one of the world's great commuter journeys and costs just a few dollars.
Top Things to See & Do
1. Sydney Opera House
Jørn Utzon's UNESCO-listed masterpiece is even more extraordinary in person than in photographs — its white shell-like roof forms rising from Bennelong Point into the blue sky. Take a guided tour of the interior, book a performance, or simply walk around it at different times of day to catch the changing light.
2. Sydney Harbour Bridge
The "Coathanger" is best appreciated by climbing it — the BridgeClimb experience takes you to the summit arch 134 metres above the harbour for views that are genuinely one of the world's great urban panoramas. At minimum, walk across it for free on the pedestrian path.
3. Bondi Beach
The most famous beach in Australia — a crescent of golden sand backed by a lively suburb of excellent cafes, bars, and surf shops. Walk the Bondi to Coogee coastal path for some of Sydney's finest scenery. The Bondi Icebergs ocean pool, with waves crashing over its walls, is iconic.
4. The Rocks
Sydney's oldest neighborhood preserves its colonial sandstone buildings in the shadow of the Harbour Bridge. Weekend markets, excellent restaurants in historic buildings, and the best views of the Opera House from the water make it a must-visit.
5. Blue Mountains Day Trip
Two hours west of Sydney, the Blue Mountains offer dramatic sandstone escarpments, the Three Sisters rock formation, ancient rainforest walks, and the Scenic Railway — the world's steepest passenger railway. An essential day trip.
What to Eat in Sydney
- Sydney rock oysters — harvested from New South Wales estuaries, among the finest oysters in the world
- Barramundi — Australia's premier eating fish, best grilled simply with lemon
- Flat white — Sydney takes its coffee extremely seriously; the flat white culture here is exceptional
- Meat pie — the Australian classic, best from a good bakery with tomato sauce
- Tim Tams — the chocolate biscuit that defines Australian snacking
Best Time to Visit
Sydney's summer (December–February) is warm, sunny, and beach-perfect. Spring (September–November) is beautiful with wildflowers and comfortable temperatures. New Year's Eve in Sydney — with fireworks over the Harbour Bridge — is one of the world's great celebrations.
