Getting There

How to Reach New Zealand

Auckland Airport (AKL) is New Zealand's main international gateway, with direct connections from Australia, Asia, the US West Coast, and the UK. Christchurch (CHC) and Wellington (WLG) also receive some international flights. New Zealand's domestic airline network connects the main cities efficiently.

💡 Pro Tip

Rent a campervan and self-drive — New Zealand is perfectly designed for road trips, with superb campgrounds, freedom camping spots, and roads that are some of the most scenic in the world.

Must-See

Top Things to See & Do

1. Fiordland & Milford Sound

Milford Sound — carved by glaciers over millennia into sheer walls of rock plunging into dark water — is New Zealand's most famous sight. The boat cruise through the fiord, with waterfalls cascading from every cliff face, is unforgettable. Doubtful Sound, less visited, is even more spectacular.

2. Queenstown

The adventure capital of the world, perched on the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the Remarkables mountain range. Bungee jumping, skydiving, jet boating, skiing — Queenstown invented many of these sports and does them better than anywhere else on Earth.

3. Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Widely considered New Zealand's greatest day hike — and one of the finest in the world. The 19km crossing traverses active volcanic landscape, past emerald crater lakes and across a lunar plain of lava. The landscape that doubled as Mordor in Lord of the Rings.

4. Bay of Islands

144 islands in a sub-tropical bay three hours north of Auckland. Sailing, dolphin swimming, diving on historic wrecks, and exploring the birthplace of New Zealand's nation at Waitangi make this the perfect first stop.

5. Rotorua

The heart of Maori culture and geothermal New Zealand — boiling mud pools, geysers, thermal baths, and immersive cultural experiences make Rotorua unlike anywhere else. Te Puia's geyser field and a traditional hangi feast are essential.
