How to Reach Santorini
Santorini Airport (JTR) receives direct flights from Athens and many European cities in summer. From Athens, the high-speed ferry takes about 5 hours; the slow ferry overnight is a romantic option. The ferry approach to Santorini — sailing into the caldera with the white villages perched impossibly on the clifftops above — is one of travel's great arrival experiences.
Book accommodation and restaurants months in advance for summer. Santorini is one of the most popular destinations in Europe and the best spots sell out extremely early. Consider visiting in May or October for fewer crowds and lower prices.
Top Things to See & Do
1. Oia at Sunset
The village of Oia at the northern tip of the island is world-famous for its sunset views — crowds gather every evening at the castle ruins to watch the sun sink into the caldera. It is undeniably spectacular. Arrive early to secure a spot, or watch from a restaurant terrace with a glass of Assyrtiko wine.
2. Fira
The island's capital clings to the caldera edge with vertiginous views down to the sea. The Archaeological Museum and the cable car (or 588 steps down to the port) are essential. The caldera-view bars and restaurants are justifiably famous.
3. Red Beach & Black Beach
Santorini's volcanic origins create beaches unlike anywhere else in Greece. Red Beach near Akrotiri has dramatic red and black volcanic cliffs; Perissa and Perivolos offer long stretches of black sand and excellent beach bars.
4. Akrotiri Archaeological Site
The remarkably preserved Minoan Bronze Age city buried by the volcanic eruption of circa 1600 BC — the probable inspiration for the Atlantis myth. Superbly presented under a modern roof, the frescoes and buildings are extraordinary.
5. Caldera Boat Trip
A boat tour of the caldera visits the active volcanic islets of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni, where you can swim in hot springs and walk across volcanic moonscape. The view back to the cliffs of Santorini from the water is even more dramatic than from above.

Best Time to Visit
May–June and September–October are ideal: warm, sunny, and dramatically less crowded than peak July–August. The island in shoulder season retains all its beauty while being actually enjoyable to explore without fighting crowds.
