How to Reach Barcelona
Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) is one of Europe's busiest, with direct connections from across the world. Budget airlines connect it to virtually every European city. The Aerobus runs directly to Plaça de Catalunya in the city center in 35 minutes. Barcelona also has excellent high-speed rail connections to Madrid (2.5 hrs) and Paris (6 hrs).
Book Sagrada Família tickets online months in advance and choose the first entry slot of the day — the morning light through the stained glass is transcendent and the crowds are lighter.
Top Things to See & Do
1. Sagrada Família
Antoni Gaudí's masterpiece — a basilica unlike anything else built in the history of architecture — has been under construction since 1882 and is still unfinished. The interior, with its forest of branching columns and kaleidoscopic stained glass pouring colored light across organic stone, is one of the most astonishing spaces in the world.
2. Park Güell
Gaudí's extraordinary hillside park with its mosaic-tiled terrace, gingerbread gatehouses, and views over the entire city is Barcelona at its most whimsical and wonderful. Book timed entry tickets in advance for the monumental zone.
3. Las Ramblas & Gothic Quarter
Las Ramblas — Barcelona's famous tree-lined pedestrian boulevard — leads into the Gothic Quarter's labyrinth of medieval lanes, hidden squares, and Roman ruins. The Barceloneta beach at the bottom end is perfect for a late afternoon swim.
4. La Boqueria Market
One of Europe's great food markets — a cathedral of produce, charcuterie, seafood, and fresh juices under a modernista iron roof. Go for breakfast with a glass of freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and a plate of jamón.
5. Montjuïc
The hill overlooking the city and harbour offers the MNAC art museum, the Fundació Joan Miró, the Olympic stadium, and the best views over Barcelona. The cable car or the Telefèric del Port provide spectacular approaches.
What to Eat in Barcelona
- Pa amb tomàquet — the Catalan staple: toasted bread rubbed with tomato and drizzled with olive oil
- Tapas — patatas bravas, gambas al ajillo, croquetas — best eaten standing at a bar
- Fideuà — the Catalan version of paella made with noodles instead of rice
- Jamón ibérico — acorn-fed Iberian ham, the finest cured meat in the world
- Crema catalana — the original crème brûlée, with caramelized sugar over orange-scented custard
