How to Reach the Maldives
Velana International Airport (MLE) on Malé serves as the main hub. From here, resorts are reached by speedboat (for atolls within 90 minutes) or by domestic seaplane — one of the world's most spectacular short flights, skimming over endless turquoise reef. Transfer arrangements are always handled by your resort.
Book the seaplane transfer — it costs more than a speedboat but flying at 300m over the Indian Ocean watching the atolls pass beneath is one of the great travel experiences and the best possible arrival to any destination.
Top Things to See & Do
1. Overwater Bungalow Life
The Maldives essentially invented the overwater bungalow concept. Waking to the sound of the Indian Ocean directly beneath your glass floor, stepping down your private ladder into warm crystal water, and watching stars from your deck at night — this is the Maldivian experience that millions dream of.
2. Snorkeling & Diving
The Maldives coral reef system is one of the richest marine environments on Earth. Manta rays, whale sharks, reef sharks, turtles, and an extraordinary density of tropical fish are encountered on virtually every dive. Even non-divers will see spectacular marine life just snorkeling from the beach.
3. Watching Whale Sharks
The South Ari Atoll has one of the most reliable year-round whale shark populations in the world. Swimming alongside the world's largest fish — completely harmless plankton feeders — in the open ocean is a life-defining experience.
4. Sandbanks
Many resorts have private sandbanks — tiny strips of white sand surrounded by turquoise lagoon, accessible by boat — where you can spend a morning in complete isolation with nothing but ocean in every direction.
5. Local Island Visits
Beyond the resort experience, visiting inhabited local islands gives a glimpse of authentic Maldivian life — the mosques, the fishing boats, the warm hospitality of a deeply Muslim island culture that has existed for centuries.
What to Eat in the Maldives
- Garudhiya — the national dish, a clear tuna broth served with rice, lime, chilli, and onion
- Mas huni — the Maldivian breakfast: shredded smoked tuna with coconut and chilli
- Fresh seafood — tuna, lobster, and reef fish caught daily and prepared beautifully at every resort
- Coconut-based dishes — the coconut palm underpins almost every aspect of Maldivian cooking
Best Time to Visit
November to April is dry season — perfect visibility for diving, calm seas, and brilliant sunshine. May to October brings the southwest monsoon with occasional rain, but also whale shark season in the southern atolls and significantly lower resort rates.
