How to Reach Edinburgh
Edinburgh Airport (EDI) has direct connections across Europe and transatlantic services. The tram connects the airport to the city center in 30 minutes. Trains from London King's Cross take 4.5 hours.
Book accommodation months in advance if visiting during the Edinburgh Festival (August) — the city's population doubles and the Fringe alone hosts over 3,000 shows.
Top Things to See & Do
1. Edinburgh Castle
The castle perched on its volcanic plug dominates the entire city. Inside, the Scottish Crown Jewels, the Stone of Destiny, and the Great Hall are the highlights. The One O'Clock Gun fires daily and still makes tourists jump.
2. The Royal Mile
The ancient spine of the Old Town running from Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse — packed with closes (narrow alleyways) leading to hidden courtyards and historic pubs.
3. Arthur's Seat
The extinct volcano rising 251m above the city center offers the finest panoramic views over Edinburgh. The 45-minute hike is entirely manageable and spectacularly rewarding.
4. Scottish National Museum
One of the UK's finest free museums — the story of Scotland from geological formation through Pictish kingdoms to modern times, including Dolly the cloned sheep.
5. Leith & The Shore
Edinburgh's port neighborhood transformed into the city's most exciting food district with more Michelin stars per capita than almost anywhere in the UK.
What to Eat in Edinburgh
- Haggis, neeps and tatties — Scotland's national dish of spiced offal with turnip and potato mash
- Scottish smoked salmon — cold-smoked over whisky barrel chips, the finest in the world
- Scotch whisky — Edinburgh has exceptional whisky bars throughout the city
- Cranachan — whipped cream, whisky, honey, and toasted oats with raspberries
