Getting There

How to Reach Cairo

Cairo International Airport (CAI) is Africa's busiest hub with direct connections from Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. The airport is about 25km northeast of the city; taxis and the Cairo Metro both serve the route. Egypt's e-visa system makes arrival straightforward for most nationalities.

💡 Pro Tip

Hire a licensed local guide for the Giza plateau and Egyptian Museum — the context and stories they provide transform a visit from impressive to genuinely mind-blowing.

Must-See

Top Things to See & Do

1. The Pyramids of Giza & the Sphinx

The last surviving wonder of the ancient world — and the sight does not disappoint. The Great Pyramid of Khufu, built over 4,500 years ago with two million stone blocks, is staggering in person in a way no photograph conveys. Enter the pyramid's interior if you can handle the claustrophobia — the experience is unforgettable.

2. The Egyptian Museum

The world's greatest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts — Tutankhamun's golden death mask, Royal Mummy Room, Amarna Period treasures — crammed into a pink neoclassical building on Tahrir Square. Allow a full day minimum.

3. Islamic Cairo — Khan el-Khalili

The medieval heart of Cairo — its minarets, mausoleums, and madrasas clustered around Al-Azhar Mosque, the oldest university in the world. The Khan el-Khalili bazaar has operated continuously for over 600 years. Drink tea at the Fishawi Cafe, open since 1773.

4. Coptic Cairo

The oldest part of the city preserves extraordinary early Christian heritage — the Hanging Church, the Coptic Museum, and the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus built over the crypt where the Holy Family supposedly sheltered during the Flight into Egypt.

5. Nile Dinner Cruise

Sailing the Nile at night on a felucca or a dinner boat, with Cairo's lit skyline reflected in the river and the sound of oud music drifting across the water, is one of those travel experiences that stays with you permanently.

Best Time to Visit

October to April is ideal — temperatures are pleasant for sightseeing. Summer (June–August) is intensely hot (40°C+) but the sites are less crowded and prices are lower. Ramadan brings a unique atmosphere to Cairo's streets.
